At STEM Minds, we’ve always been committed to helping kids develop into future–ready leaders. This is why we emphasize digital skills that are becoming increasingly vital across all sectors of the global economy. We think digital skills and technology are an excellent way to foster problem–solving, creativity, critical thinking, and innovation – skills that are more in–demand than ever, not only in the job market, but also in solving the world’s problems.
We strongly believe that every child should have access to meaningful STEM learning opportunities, but recognize that this is not currently the case. Although the Government of Ontario updated its math curriculum with the addition of coding, many teachers have not received training in this area to be able to provide meaningful experiences to their students, nor have they been consistently provided with training or inspiration in other STEM topics.
We were very proud to be able to support teachers and students in adopting coding in their classrooms by offering a series of virtual teacher professional development and live- streamed classroom workshops funded by FIRST, through a CanCode grant. The aim of CanCode is to support opportunities that provide coding training to students across Canada and support professional development for teachers looking to introduce digital skills and coding–related concepts in their classrooms.
From Fall 2020 to Spring 2021, we offered 40 professional development workshops for teachers covering a range of topics, primarily focused on coding. The aim of these workshops was to inspire and empower these educators with the confidence and skills they needed to introduce coding to their classrooms.
During this period, we also offered 4 live- streamed workshops for classrooms, where teachers and their students could join our expert instructors live to learn coding through hands–on activities and projects.
Through our professional development and classroom workshops, we had the pleasure of introducing thousands of teachers and students to the exciting world of coding and STEM. We are very proud to have supported their classrooms as they adopted the updated curriculum, and to have spread a knowledge and love for coding across schools in Canada.
Here is just a taste of what they had to say:
STEM Minds has truly helped me with my science/math connections through their teacher sessions. The sessions have made me excited for our new curriculum and I find myself weaving in connections to other strands in my classroom. Thank you, STEM Minds!
This was a fantastic workshop and I would highly recommend it to all, especially those with little coding experience. I learned so much from this workshop and am super happy that I was able to participate! I will definitely use this in my class. Thank you!
You are seriously rock stars! Every SINGLE one of your sessions that I have participated in have been informative, fun, inspiring and useful!
As always, the background information on the webinar subject sets the tone and levels the playing field for all participants. The instruction steps are broken down in a way that is manageable yet keeps interest level high. Having plenty of time for the question period shows a true concern for participants and a love of the subject matter.
Wow! You guys are seriously amazing and have been the best thing for me starting my first year as a STEM teacher. You guys have saved me! Thank saved me! Thank you so much!
We continue to dedicate ourselves to supporting teachers and students in building the skills they need for success in the 21st century. Thank you to FIRST and CanCode for helping us reach thousands of students across the country and bring these powerful learning experiences to all!
