FREE – Skills Development Workshops

STEM Minds and Boreal Farms are excited to offer FREE Agri Tech skill building workshop for York Region.

Workshops for Agri Tech – Get started with a unique learning opportunity experience!

Join us in-person at York Region Municipality Office and then a bus ride to Boreal Farms to get hands-on with AgriTech learning opportunities. Our expert instructors will lead you through a fully curriculum-connected, hands-on learning journey like you’ve never seen.

Full Day Workshop – Nov 21st, 2024  (9:00am-3:00pm), Room: TBD; Visit to Boreal Farms (13175 Weston Rd, King City)

  • Innovations, Careers and Trends in Ontario’s Agri-Food Sector

The workshop will run from 9:00am-11:45pm at York Region office, Room TBD. The participants will then board a bus at 12:00pm to Boreal Farms where light lunch will be provided. We will participate in hands-on activities at the farm until 2:30pm with a bus ride back to the campus.

Please note, participating in this program will require each student to complete the Skills Development Fund Participation Registration Form. This is a mandatory requirement from the Ministry of Labour. These forms will need to be completed and submitted when the workshop is delivered. By enrolling in this program you are providing your explicit consent to participating and providing the required information. The forms will be saved for 7 years as mandated by the Province for this Project and in compliance with applicable Privacy Laws and will be made available to the Province, upon request.

Workshop Option: Innovations, Careers and Trends in Ontario’s Agri-Food Sector

In this 3 hour workshop you will learn:

Introduction to Canadian Agriculture

  • Overview of the impacts (social, environmental, economic) of Canadian agriculture
  • Introduction of sub-sectors of primary production (beef, poultry, dairy, cash crops, horticulture, aquaculture, fruits, vegetables)
  • Introduction to challenges and opportunities in primary production around the world
  • Focus on Ontario, York Region & Simcoe County’s Agriculture Sector
    • Highlight regional trends for primary production across Ontario
    • Highlight key trends, locations and markets within YR & SC

Introducing the Agri-Food Value Chain

  • Overview of the Agri-Food value chain and career pathways and opportunities
    • Input suppliers, logistics, production, processing, retail, nutrition, marketing, research
  • Introduction to local businesses in YR & SC and their role in the agri-food value chain
  • Overview of current and future opportunities in Agri-Food
    • Identifying trends, innovations and best practices
  • Introducing the role of Agri-Tech in the value chain
    • Case studies of Ontario businesses leveraging technology to improve practices
    • Overview of Institutions working on Agricultural Innovations
  • Introduction to Community / Local Organizations working within social needs of Agri-Food
    • Charities, Nonprofits and NGO’s that work to support food security and sovereignty locally

Impacts of Local Food on Health, Community, Economy and Climate Change

  • Discuss what the term ‘local food’ means and introduce programs that support local food
    • Stats and figures highlighting the value and potential of Ontario grown / raised foods
  • Introduce real and potential climate impacts of agriculture globally and regionally
    • Highlight some strategies / organisations that are working towards climate resilient farming
  • Review best practices as related to on-farm sustainability
    • Case studies / examples of what small-scale farmers are doing to regenerate the land and produce healthier foods for Ontarians

Health & Safety, Careers and Soft Skills

  • Introduction to food and operational safety on farms (general themes and considerations)
  • Introduction of Agri-Tech that supports Health & Safety tracking and traceability on farms
  • Discussing some of the core soft skills required for career success in Agri-Food
