The world has changed a lot over the last few decades. In fact, there has been more change in the last couple of centuries, as far as technological advances go, than in most of human history combined. In just the past 40 years, whole fields of study and countless new careers have been created.

The one thing all of these new careers (and particularly the in-demand, high paying ones) have in common is they all require math and science to succeed.  Fortunately, there are clear indicators of what the best careers will be in the future, so you can make sure your kids pursue the right industries and fields of study. The great news is that most of these fields are gender neutral, so they’re all a great reason for girls in STEM fields to look forward to great careers!

Accounting and Financial Services

Whether it’s in general management, investment banking or accounting services, the financial services industry is a great place to launch a career in the near future. These industries will all see healthy growth over the next few years, and they all offer above average starting salaries for graduates, which make them an attractive choice for anyone who likes working with numbers.

Engineering

Whether you’re talking software engineering, mining or construction (or any other engineering field out there), there’s a burgeoning international demand for qualified candidates in nearly every engineering specialty. Growth in this industry is expected to be nearly 4% per year, and with high starting salaries and great job security, this is a great choice for anyone who enjoys practical applications of STEM studies.

Medicine

Another STEM-based field seeing nearly 4% growth in demand every year is medicine. Almost every area—from nursing, through specialist surgery and dentistry, to veterinary studies—has a high demand for qualified candidates. Studying anything in the medical field can secure a high paying, interesting and stable job for kids who enjoy STEM studies.

Chemistry and Electronics

These are two more STEM-based fields of study currently in high demand and likely to remain so in future. Organic chemistry in particular is going to be essential, so careers like chemists and biotechnical research are a great choice. In the electronics field, the focus is likely to remain on circuits and semiconductors to power and drive our ever-growing collection of gadgets.

STEM Is a Foundation for Success

There is a broad range of careers coming to the fore as paths to watch over the next few decades, but they all have one thing in common: a basis in science, technology, engineering and math. They’re also open to anyone, of any gender, as long as they have a good grasp on STEM concepts, which is good news for girls in STEM fields!

If you want your kids to succeed when they graduate from college, it’s worth giving them a good foundation in STEM studies. To be successful in one of the exciting, rewarding careers out there, they’re going to need it!
